And what I don't understand is why people think god is a counter-thesis to evolution.
Possibility one - God exists and the Earth revolves around the sun
Possibility two - God doesn't exist and the Earth revolves around the sun
Possibility one - God exists and humans evolved to their current form over billions of years
Possibility two - God doesn't exist and humans evolved to their current form over billions of years
And I didn't literally mean I don't understand the idea of creationism excluding evolution, but what I'm saying is why is set #2 any different than set #1 in logic and factual significance?

What I'm not understanding is how believing that there is a god who created life with the snap of his fingers is less difficult than believing in evolution, or that all of life spawned from a single organism. I mean they're essentially the same thing, except with a mythical being in one idea, and science in the other.

This is interesting reading to me because I don't know of any creationist's, I didn't think they actually existed except in theoretical arguments and a couple long-lost US states (no evolutionary pun intended, srsly)

I applaud Darwinists, you guys have much more faith than Creationists.
People generally believe evolution because they find it to be true. We don't get to feel significant or special or contemplate immortality and blessings and heaven because of it.
If evolution and creationism were equally baseless, evolution would be a more valid belief system just for the fact that believing you were hand made by God is essentially ego gratification. You can be a special eternal being but not a special organism.
Unfortunately you are a generic organism.

Scientists have been trying to create new life from non living chemicals for over a century, without any success. But even if they could, wouldn't that only prove that it need INTELLIGENCE to create something as immensly complex as life.
It takes intelligence to recreate naturally occurring conditions. If we found a planet in its molten formation stages with similar elements, we could just watch it rather than artificially design it. The only reason we try to recreate abiogenesis is because we haven't found somewhere to observe it yet. And I am sure within the future we will both create abiogenesis and find it as well.

Well by that theory we are just machines.
So then, you do not believe in free will?
So then, you do not believe in free will?
Most human action is subconscious and thus involuntary. Free will is a term that shouldn't even be used, we are limited in our freedom to make choices, both by the fundamentals of nature and our brain capacity. Can you stop breathing if you want? Do you consciously make the choice to turn the steering wheel every time you drive?
You have a poor understanding of the human condition if you don't recognize how much is automatic. Consciousness is only one part of us and it is in fact just an occurrence. It's called emergence.

To the best of my knowledge I don't know any creationists. I know a few people who believe a combination (evolution etc happened but due to God).
Now that I really don't get. Actually, I fail to get a lot of the things that liberal Christians do. The fundies are crazy, but at least they take the whole package. I don't really understand how your religion can still have meaning when you compromise most of it in order to accommodate the parts which are obviously false or completely clash with modern culture.

I don't know any creationists either but I'm not sure about ID. I think a few of my good friends might believe in it just because they never felt like questioning it.

Also, I almost claimed I don't know anyone who believes in intelligent design but this topic made me think I should poll my friends, just to be sure.

There is a chipmunk
At the center of the earth
And in his big oven
He bakes his own desserts
He warms the ocean
And from that, life springs forth
Little organisms building trash around the clock
Compost heaps
Or melting pots
For Farmer John's
Smoked Sausage stocks
Worms make the dirt
And the dirt makes the earth
And all of the roots have a place to sleep now
All the chanuks have squash to eat now
Worms make the dirt
And the dirt makes the earth
And people hold hands and feel terrific
Food comes from dirt
It's scientific
Yeah! Wow!
There's so much to learn!
The Sun came from a cave
And it made the clouds go by
(Hi!)
The clouds had a conference
And rain fell from the sky
(Wow!)
Worms got thirsty
From eating too much dirt
(Yeah!)
They came...
