A communist (and I don't mean in the Leninist sense - you can say anarchist here if you want) revolution will be "authoritarian." Any forcing of will on anyone or anything is authoritarian. But I do not have a problem with this, nor do I think this inherently authoritarian act will create an "authoritarian" society. And I think that this talk of authoritarian vs anti-authoritarian and hierarchy vs non-hierarchy are incomplete and amputated dialogues. Control need not be explicitly authoritarian or hierarchical to attenuate behavioral intensity. I think humanist ideals are the best (or worst I suppose : ) ) example of this. Lately I have been questioning that idea that humanity can come peacefully together within some sort of unified social whole without some sort of control, be it the accountability processes of the anarchists or the police of biopolitical democracies. The primary forms of humanity unity are ethical positions, or forms-of-life as some philosophers have put it. Different bodies have different ways of doing the things they do in life, and I think actual freedom means living the way you do to its most logical intensity. Any talk of absolute or world peace means attenuating, to some degree, these ethical positions, which requires some form of control. Finally, I do not see police and soldiers as comparable. People who become cops, even those with the best of intentions ( who are usually weeded out anyway as they become aware of what the police actually do), do so because they think society needs policing. I think there are definitely people who join the military for the same reason, that the world needs some sort of police force. But there are a ton of people who join out of some sort desire to be a part of a community (whether this is a national community or just the community of their squad isn't too important - although obviously I am against nationalism of any sort), there are people who are forced into joining because they are poor and unskilled and come from areas that have already been forsaken by the rest of society and capital, there are people who join because it is a way of possibly getting into college or making sure their loved ones can be taken care of, etc etc. And there is an actual class divide within the military between the people who come from money who go into a military academy and become an officer, and those who are working class and join as rank-n-file. Not to mention that throughout history, military conscription was pretty rampant, and this creates a significant difference between soldiers and cops. [/quote]

I don't know of any building occupations, the last I heard they were still occupying various parks in Atlanta, as they get thrown out of one they move to another. I think Occupy Athens is dead, but my news is out of date.

So I'm sure that everyone is aware that attempts to occupy buildings are being met with arrests. I'm wondering if anyone knows of a building occupation that has been successfully defended thus far?

So the Washington State Capitol building has been occupied. I'm trying to get a good feed of this but I can't find anything! Will post more news as soon as it develops.

After 42 days, Occupy Edmonton was evicted today. Now the question on our minds, and on the minds of many camps around the world that are facing similar consequences, is "what's next?" Where does this movement go from here, and how do we prevent this from turning into "feel-good" marches that gather crowds, but have no long term vision? Should we start occupying buildings? Should we even maybe start purchasing buildings legally and turning them into collectively run non-heirarchical workplaces? Occupy Wall Street (in New York) has half a million dollars in donations. What should this money be used for?

I'm interested in having this diaglogue with the people here, and maybe hearing the experiences of your own camps, and if they're still up.

Not wanting these things to happen to you doesn't mean you have to stand by and take pictures. And I just said, it would have made it harder for the cops, not that expected it from everybody. But if you're not going to do anything against what's happening out of fear, it looks different than what those people are doing with their cameras and phones. At least to me.

That's pretty nuts. I see the importance of cameras in gaining evidence to sue the pants off the cops but dunno what to think of this wall-of-iPhones. The way the cop flourishes the spray is like he's about to perform a magic trick.
